Mike Vogel is the Editorial Page Editor of The Buffalo News. An editorial writer since 1998, he joined The News staff as a reporter in 1970 and, over nearly three decades, covered a variety of beats and specialty assignments.

He twice traveled to Poland to report on conditions during the rise of Solidarity and the aftermath of martial law, interviewing Lech Walesa and other leaders. He also spent time with military units in the Persian Gulf area during Operation Desert Shield and traveled with Pope John Paul II during a papal visit to Canada. Other assignments have taken him to port cities across the United States to report on waterfront redevelopment projects, to sites throughout the Great Lakes region to cover water level and pollution problems, down luge runs and into wind tunnels with the U.S. Winter Olympic team, to Cree and Inuit encampments in the far North to report on the environment, out on the yardarms of square-riggers under sail and into jet cockpits with the Blue Angels and other aviators, and to the Pacific Northwest to report on archaeology sites.

His work has won more than 60 journalism awards, including American Planning Association top national honors for coverage of urban planning issues, Northeast regional awards for reporting on the needs of the mentally disabled, and top New York State Bar Association honors for coverage of legal issues.

He is a former member of the National Association of Science Writers and the Society of Environmental Journalists, and currently belongs to the National Conference of Editorial Writers. A U.S. Army veteran, he also is the author or co-author of six books on local history.
