Charity Vogel (PhD English 2004; MA English 2000) a Buffalo native, is the Monday columnist for The Buffalo News, where she also works as a feature writer and book critic. She serves as faculty adviser to students at The Spectrum, UB’s 10,000-circulation student newspaper. Vogel is the third generation in her family to work in newspapers and has won numerous awards for her non-fiction writing, including several top awards from the New York State Associated Press and two top prizes for public service journalism from the New York State Publishers’ Association. In 2009, her work on poverty among children in Buffalo was a finalist for a Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. She has been a professional journalist for ten years, working at The Buffalo News in coverage areas including politics, Erie County government, schools, and towns. After college, she worked briefly in the National Bureau of The Boston Globe, under Pulitzer-winning journalist David Shribman. She has published short stories and poems, and is at work on a non-fiction book that will be published by Cornell University Press, likely in 2011.
